Big Brown? Belmont Blemish?

Does the questionable finish in the Belmont Stakes leave a blemish on the career of Big Brown and or Thoroughbred Racing?

Can this question the title of Champion 3YO Colt 2008?

Maybe the concern arises from the belief that Big Brown should have become a “Triple Crown Winner”.

Try this exercise. Place a wager of $10 per every Belmont Stakes entrant other than Big Brown.

As long as Big Brown finishes off the board, a bookmaker has six profitable wager pools.

Is this an outrageous conspiracy theory?
Vicki J – Why did the jockey not pull Big Brown up and await assistance? A sprung shoe can cause serious injury even at the walk.
Rider fought Big Brown for the length of the stretch.

The only way Big Brown will lose champion 3 year old is if a 3 year old wins the Classic. Even then, I wouldn’t think his title would be in jeopardy except that WAY too much emphasis is put on the Breeders Cup races… the BC winners are almost always the Eclipse award winners. Colonel John won the California preps, the Travers, and perhaps the Classic. Big Brown won everything except the Belmont… to me, between the two, Big Brown should win the eclipse but those people often do things I don’t really agree with.

No one can say that Big Brown is undefeated… he’s not perfect… but it’s not really a blemish. It’s not like he legitimately went out there and finished last. He would have finished mediocrely, but Kent decided to give the horse a break instead of pushing him the rest of the way. — I seriously wonder if Kent had kept riding, what would have happened. The Haskell looked exactly the same to me as the Belmont did… at the top of the stretch, it looked like BB was done, but Kent kept working at it and Big Brown found more after they straightened out and changed to the right lead. But for Kent pulling him up, BB very well may have come back to win that race, or at least finished in the money. We’ll never know, but I wouldn’t call it a blemish. Honestly, I don’t think the horse was well prepared for the race… if we’re going to claim anyone deserves a blemish, it’s Dutrow. Otherwise, BB has plenty of excuses for not winning the race… obviously the shoe issue for one. And how many perfectly wonderful horses couldn’t win the whole triple crown… none of them deserve to have a blemish on their record. It’s a tough thing to do and winning 2 legs is amazing… winning 2 legs and every other start of your career is spectacular. No blemishes for this horse.

To address the shoe issue… Kent didn’t pull up the horse because the horse didn’t feel lame. He travelled really well. Kent said that the horse wasn’t lame but that “something’s wrong.” I think what happened is that Big Brown had the shoe problem, but the adrenaline and will to win kept him running for as long as he could, but the pain got to be too much. That said, the horse was never visibly lame so I can’t really explain how the shoe could have been painful enough that the horse didn’t run well, but still the horse wasn’t lame. I dunno.
