Small Dog breed recommendation please?

I would like to adopt a small dog — preferably a mutt from a shelter/rescue facility, so that complicates this question — but would like recommendations as to what breeds/mixes of breeds I should aim for. Here’s what I’d like: a lap dog, calm, NOT YIPPY, affectionate, smart, gentle, not a “one person” dog, friendly with strangers, preferably a dog that doesn’t shed a lot or need frequent grooming. I know, I know, such a dog probably doesn’t exist. Those are my preferences, however. My MAIN preference is NOT YIPPY and gentle and affectionate. Thanks!!!!

I think you can find most of the things you are looking for, but as the others said, you may have to sacrifice something. It seems that the best thing for you to do, is to go to the shelters and look at the dogs. You are not going to be able to necessarily tell if the dog will be friendly with strangers, but if the dog does seem friendly with you, that would be a good start. Look for things like: does the dog want to get near you, look up at you, look for reassurance from you? More friendly dogs who aren’t particularly independent will probably be more interested in winning your affection. If you are allowed to take it outside, does it seem playful? One-person dogs will probably seem a little more independent right away, but I am not certain of that. Barking: You will see that a lot of the dogs at the shelters bark a lot, right there. They are scared, but you can see which ones bark more than others. Our dog who came from the shelter, just looked up at me with those soft brown eyes. She looked hopeful. When we took her outside, she wanted to play and frolic, but she was only six months old, so she was a little more ‘frolicky’ than an older dog. An older dog may not be as light-hearted while at the scary shelter. I would go for personality and temperment far above brains, for a dog. Brainy dogs are usually a little more to handle, as they are more likely to find ways to outwit you. Shedding is going to be a hard one to tell if the dog is mixed. Just plan on brushing it regularly and giving it a healthy dog food. After bathing a dog, if you apply a little grooming conditiioner spray, it will make the coat sleek and easier to handle. Dogs who have fur that grows long will need more trimming and trips to the groomer. If you contact a rescue league, they might be able to give you a few more pointers, even if you don’t adopt a dog from them. They have had a lot of experience with a lot of dogs of all different breeds. Just spend a little time with the dog at the shelter, and see what you think of it.
